TREES DEFINE OUR LIVES – HON. BONZOH

The District Chief Executive of the Ellembelle District, Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh has indicated that trees define our lives as a people and has therefore, passionately appealed to all and sundry to support the President’s initiative of Greening Ghana.
According to him, our forest reserves over the years has been lost to human activities such as galamsey, deforestation and other vices that has robbed us of the benefits in marching up to the population growth with the forest reserve.
He expressed worry over the heightened depletion of the forest which now has left the total forest reserve at 1.8 million in recent times which is far lower than what it used to be.
He implored upon all and sundry to involve themselves in the Green Ghana programme so that the future generations would reap its benefits.
The Deputy Manager of Forestry who oversees four assemblies namely Tarkwa Municipal, Prestea Huni Valley Municipal, Nzema East Municipal, Jomoro Municipal and Ellembelle District Assembly, Mr. Victor Owusu Adade indicated that the Green Ghana is a presidential initiative aimed at planting five million trees nationwide.
He pointed out that the vision of the Forestry Commission was to leave a greener and rich forest for the upcoming generation adding that their core duties are to manage, protect and develop the forest.
He hinted that in a way of developing the forests, they plant trees continually to enrich the forest adding that they have guards that help in protecting the forests to monitor the activities of unscrupulous people who have made it a habit of felling trees indiscriminately.
He mentioned that the benefits of planting trees are enormous such as air purification and the protection of our water bodies and therefore joined the call for all citizens to plant trees to promote the Green Ghana Programme.
Mr. Adade indicated that the Commission would monitor all trees planted to assess its progress, he added that they would continue to support individuals and organizations with plant seedlings to encourage planting and as well give advice that would help sustain the campaign.
